Wombat Controller Test
Records what a USB game controller tells the computer, so we can check whether it works with the BMOW Wombat. Nothing is sent anywhere: at the end you save a log file and email it to BMOW.
1. Before you start
- Use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a desktop computer (Windows, Mac or Linux). Firefox and Safari can't read USB devices.
- Connect one controller at a time, directly or through a hub. Unplug other game controllers.
- If the controller has a mode switch (like X / D on Logitech pads), test each mode as a separate controller.
- Quit Steam and any other program that uses game controllers (such as DS4Windows or reWASD). Steam can turn the stick into a mouse and the buttons into clicks, which interferes with the test. On Windows the logo button may also open the Game Bar; that's harmless (it can be turned off in Settings, Gaming, Game Bar).
Linux: if the controller doesn't appear in the lists
Linux only lets the browser read USB and HID devices with permission. With the controller plugged in, run:
sudo chmod a+rw /dev/hidraw* /dev/bus/usb/*/*
then reload this page and try again. The permission lasts until the controller is unplugged.
2. Describe the controller
3. Choose the controller
Use both buttons below, one after the other. Each opens a list from the browser; pick the controller in it. The two lists record different things, so please do both. If the controller isn't in a list, click Cancel there; that is useful to know too.
Also press any button on the controller now, so the browser's game controller support sees it: no controller seen yet
4. Button test
Do what it says, then click Next (or press Enter on the keyboard). If the controller doesn't have that control, click Doesn't have it.
5. Save the log
Save the file and email it to BMOW. Then test the next controller.
