Get your vintage Macintosh up and running again, with floppy disks of system startup software and other essential programs. Is your old Mac flashing a question mark icon when you turn it on? Do you need SCSI utilities to format your hard disk, or a terminal program to connect with the outside world? BMOW can help!
This disk copying service will create 800K or 400K Macintosh floppies with essential software for your “Mac from the attic”, like a Mac Plus, SE, or Mac Portable. It’s all freely downloadable software from Apple and other sources, and BMOW is offering this service for computer collectors who can’t create 800K/400K disks on their own. These are DS/DD double-density floppies, written using Apple’s unique variable-speed recording method. The oldest Macs can’t read common 1.44 MB floppies, and PC and USB floppy drives can not create 800K/400K disks – trust me on this! The only way to create them is with a 25+ year old floppy drive from an Apple computer.
These floppy disks can help resurrect your old Mac for just a few dollars. If you’re looking for a complete Macintosh and Apple II disk solution that supports an unlimited number of disks downloaded from the web, and hard disk emulation too, check out the BMOW Floppy Emu solid-state disk emulator.
Instructions and manuals are not included – only the floppy disks. While I test every disk, I can’t guarantee your Mac will boot, as there may be other hardware issues causing startup problems with machines of this age. Web forums like thinkclassic.org and 68kmla.org are a great source of advice if you need help.
Colors and brands of disk media will vary. Shipping within the United States is $3 for up to three disks, and calculated by weight for larger orders.
These disks are useful for the earliest Macintosh models: the Mac 128K, 512K, 512Ke, Plus, SE, SE FDHD, SE/30, Classic, Portable, and Macintosh II series. They can also be used with newer models like the Mac LC series, Quadras, and Powerbooks, but it may be easier for you to create 1.44 MB disks yourself for those systems. Newer models may also require additional system enablers or control panels not included on these disks.
400K disks can be read by any Macintosh.
800K disks can be read by any Macintosh except the Macintosh 128K and 512K.
System 3.2 is recommended for the Macintosh 128K, 512K, and 512Ke.
System 6.0.8 is recommended for all other Macintosh models.
System Software 6.0.8 – 800K – A great lean-and-mean OS for most vintage Macs. This customized disk includes Multifinder, Appleshare, the Imagewriter II printer driver, and Mac Envy control panel for system diagnostics. Appleshare supports LocalTalk network connections to other Apple computers. Not compatible with the Mac 128K or Mac 512K.
System 3.2 with HD20 Init – 400K – The recommended operating system for the Mac 128K and 512K. This customized disk includes Apple’s HD20 Init, which enables the Mac 512K to use a Floppy Emu in hard disk mode, or an external 800K floppy drive. The disk also includes the Imagewriter II printer driver, and Apple’s HD20 test program.
Mac Applications – 400K – MacPaint drawing program, MacWrite word processor, Red Ryder serial/modem terminal, Copy II Mac disk duplication utility, UnStuffIt 1.5.1 decompressor for file archives. Not a startup disk: you’ll need to boot your Mac from another system software disk, before running these programs.
SCSI Tools – 800K – Lido 7.56 utility for SCSI formatting and partitioning, HDSC Setup 7.3.5 (patched) official Apple SCSI formatting tool, SCSI Probe control panel for low-level troubleshooting, Iomega driver 4.2 system INIT for Zip 100 drives, Disk Copy 4.2 floppy disk duplication tool, Disk First Aid utility for testing and repairing filesystem errors. Not a startup disk: you’ll need to boot your Mac from another system software disk, before running these programs. Not compatible with the Mac 128K or Mac 512K.
Mac Games – 800K – Play your old favorites! Rogue, Risk, ShufflePuck Cafe, Missile Command, Space Invaders, Klondike, Glider+, Lode Runner, and Zork I. Not a startup disk: you’ll need to boot your Mac from another system software disk, before running these programs. Not compatible with the Mac 128K or Mac 512K.
