This page describes a small set of patches to Mac OS System 7.5 or later. These patches are required when using System 7.5 – 8.1 on certain Macintosh models with an upgraded ROM, such as a Mac ROM-inator II or a borrowed IIsi or IIfx ROM SIMM. The information below was taken from Gamba’s Macintosh web page and is preserved here to help ensure it doesn’t disappear from the web.

Mac IIcx and IIcx Note: It was originally believed these patches were only necessary for the Mac SE/30, but we’ve since learned they’re also relevant to the Mac IIx and IIcx, and possibly others too. Gamba’s instructions below will direct you to find sections of the System file with this general form:

… 0007 0003 0008 0003 0009 0003 …

These are pairs of gestalt IDs followed by boot methods. The boot method is 0003 for each of the gestalt IDs 0007, 0008, and 0009. For System 7.5 or later to function correctly with an alternate ROM, you must find the gestalt ID for your Macintosh model, and change the corresponding boot method to 0005. The notes below are specific to the Mac SE/30, which has gestalt ID 0009. The other relevant IDs are:

0007 – Mac IIx
0008 – Mac IIcx
0009 – Mac SE/30

Description:

Following are methods for installing OS 7.0.1, 7.1, 7.5.3, 7.5.5, 7.6.1, 8.0, or 8.1 on an SE/30 with a IIsi or IIfx ROM SIMM.

With these ROM SIMMs Mode 32 is not required and should not be installed.
Minimum hardware requirements: 16 MB RAM, 44 MB free space on hard drive.

We have not encountered any problems with variations in SE/30 logic boards.

ROM SIMM information is included.  Compatibility with boot disks has been tested.

OS 7.0.1 & 7.1 Install:

   Both 7.0.1 and 7.1 work OK without hacks, with Installer option

   ‘Customize: System Software for any Macintosh’.

OS 7.5.3 Install:

1. Hard drive to have OS 7.0.1 or 7.1. Also 7.5.3 Installer, System Picker 1.1a3, ResEdit 2.1.3, and Mode32 v7.5 Installer.
   
2. Turn off SE/30 and install IIsi or IIfx ROM SIMM.
   
3. Boot from hard drive OS 7.0.1 or 7.1 and open Mode32 v7.5 Installer. Remove Mode 32 v7.5.
   
4. In Memory control panel set ’32-bit Addressing’ to ‘On’. Close Memory control panel and reboot.
   
5. Launch the 7.5.3 Installer with Installer options “Clean Install” (COMMAND SHIFT k) and “Easy Install”.
   
   NOTE: “Clean Install” will save the original System software in ‘Previous System Folder’

6. After Installer is done, restart with 7.0.1 Disk Tools floppy and do:
   
    ResEdit hack to ‘System 7.5 Update’ file in ‘System Folder’:
   
    • ‘gusd’ resource ‘ID 1’ at offset ‘000018’, replace data ‘0008 0003 0009 0003‘ with data ‘0008 0003 0009 0005‘.
   
    ResEdit hack to ‘System’ file in ‘System Folder’:
   
    • ‘gusd’ resource ‘ID 1’ at offset ‘000018’, replace data ‘0008 0003 0009 0003‘ with data ‘0008 0003 0009 0005‘.
   
7. Use System Picker to select hard drive OS 7.5.3 for reboot.

OS 7.5.5 Update Install:

1. Hard drive to have OS 7.5.3, installed per above. Also 7.5.5 Update Installer, System Picker 1.1a3, ResEdit 2.1.3, and Disk Copy 6.3.3.
   
2. Boot from hard drive OS 7.5.3. Mount the OS 7.5.5 disk images on the desktop. Launch the 7.5.5 Update Installer.
   
3. After Installer is done, restart with 7.0.1 Disk Tools floppy and do.
   
    ResEdit hack to ‘System’ file in ‘System Folder’:
   
    • ‘gusd’ resource ‘ID 1’ at offset ‘000018’, replace data ‘0008 0003 0009 0003‘ with data ‘0008 0003 0009 0005‘.
   
4. Use System Picker to select hard drive OS 7.5.5 for reboot.

OS 7.6.1 Install:

1. NOTE: 7.6.1 Update will be installed on top of 7.6 without trying to boot from 7.6.
   
2. CD ROM drive or hard drive to have OS 7.6 installer.
   
3. Hard drive to have OS 7.0.1 or 7.1, 7.6.1 Update Installer, ResEdit 2.1.3, and Disk Copy 6.3.3.
   
4. Modify 7.0.1 Disk Tools floppy as follows:
   
    • Trash Apple HD SC Setup.
   
    • Add Wish I Were and CD-Sunrise v2.2c extensions to Extensions folder.
   
    • Add Wish I Were control panel to Control Panels folder.
   
    • Add System_Picker 1.1a3 application.
   
   
5. Turn off SE/30 and install IIsi or IIfx ROM SIMM.
   
6. Boot from modified 7.0.1 Disk Tools floppy, set Wish I Were control panel to ‘Macintosh IIsi’, close control panel, and reboot with modified 7.0.1 Disk Tools floppy.
   
7. Launch the 7.6 Installer with Installer options “Clean Install” and “Easy Install”.
   
8. After the 7.6 Installer is done Trash any mounted 7.6 Installer images from desktop.
   
9. Launch the 7.6.1 Update installer. After the 7.6.1 Update installer is done do:
   
    ResEdit hack to 7.6.1 System file:
   
    • ‘gusd’ resource ‘ID 1’ at offset ‘000018’ ,
   
     replace data ‘0008 0003 0009 0003‘
     with   data ‘0008 0003 0009 0005‘.
   
10. Use System Picker to select hard drive OS 7.6.1 for reboot.

OS 8.0 Install:

1. Hard drive to have OS 7.0.1 or 7.1, System Picker 1.1a3, ResEdit 2.1.3, Wish I Were, Mode32 v7.5 Installer, and os8-030patch folder.
   
2. CD ROM drive to have OS 8.0 or OS 8.1 CD.
   
3. Turn off SE/30 and install IIsi or IIfx ROM SIMM.
   
4. Boot from hard drive OS 7.0.1 or 7.1 and open Mode32 v7.5 Installer. Remove Mode 32 v7.5.
   
5. In Memory control panel set ’32-bit Addressing’ to ‘On’. Close Memory control panel.
   
6. Drag Wish I Were control panel and Wish I Were extension to hard drive 7.0.1 or 7.1 System Folder icon.
    Set Wish I Were control panel to ‘Quadra 700’, close control panel, then reboot.
   
7. On the Mac OS 8.1 CD, the OS 8.0 Installer is located at
   
    Full Install Pieces–>Software Installers–>System Software–>Mac OS 8–>.
   
8. Launch the 8.0 Installer with Installer options “Clean Install” and “Easy Install”.
   
9. After Installer is done, restart with 7.0.1 Disk Tools floppy and do:
   
    ResEdit hacks to 8.0 System file:
   
    • Replace ‘boot’ resource ‘ID 2’ with the same resource from ‘os8-030patch.rsrc’.
   
    • Replace ‘gbly’ resource ‘ID -16385’ with the same resource from ‘os8-030patch.rsrc’.
   
    • ‘gusd’ resource ‘ID 1’ at offset ‘000010’, replace data ‘0016 0006’ with data ‘0009 0005’.
   
10. Trash the ‘Monitors and Sound’ control panel.
    
11. From the Apple Extras folder drag both the ‘Monitors’ and ‘Sound’ control panels to the System Folder icon.
    
12. Use System Picker to select hard drive OS 8.0 for reboot.
    NOTE: System 7 will now be in ‘Previous System Folder’

OS 8.1 Update Install:

1. Hard drive to have OS 8.0, installed per above, and OS 8.1 Update installer, Disk Copy 6.3.3, System Picker 1.1a3, ResEdit 2.1.3, Wish I Were, and os8-030patch folder.
   
2. Boot from hard drive OS 8.0.
   
3. Drag Wish I Were control panel and Wish I Were extension to OS 8.0 System folder icon.
   
4. Set Extensions Manager to ‘My Settings’, check all boxes.
   
5. Set Wish I Were control panel to ‘Quadra 700’, close control panel, then reboot.
   
6. Open Mac OS 8.1 Update installer, in Options uncheck ‘Update Apple Hard Drive Drivers’.
   
7. Run Mac OS 8.1 Update installer.
   
8. After installer is done, restart with 7.0.1 Disk Tools floppy and do:
   
    ResEdit hacks to 8.1 System file:
   
    • Replace ‘gbly’ resource ‘ID -16385’ with the same resource from ‘os8-030patch.rsrc’.
   
    • ‘gusd’ resource ‘ID 1’ at offset ‘000010’, replace data ‘0016 0006’ with data ‘0009 0006’.
   
9. Use System Picker to select hard drive OS 8.1 for reboot.
